Spiced Sangria Recipe

A reduced-calorie adaptation of the classic summer patio pleaser. Invite over some friends, pour it over ice and have a sweet, tart time of it. This sangria has 43% fewer calories* and 92% less sugar* than the full-sugar version. Makes 10 servings.

Spiced Simple Syrup (Makes 1 cup)


  • 1 bottle (750 mL) red wine

  • 34 cup spiced simple syrup (recipe above)

  • 3 cups sparkling water

  • Juice of 1 orange (about 14cup)

  • 1 orange, sliced thinly

  • 1 lemon, sliced thinly

  • 1 lime, sliced thinly

  • 2 cups ice cubes


  • 1.

    Place all of the ingredients in a medium saucepot, stir.

    Place on high heat, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.

  • 3.

    Remove from heat, allow to cool completely.

  • 4.

    Pour syrup through a strainer to remove spices.

  • 5.

    Pour syrup into a jar with lid and store refrigerated. Shake before using.

  • 6.

    Combine wine, 3⁄4cup spiced simple syrup, sparkling water, orange juice and fruit slices.

  • 7.

    Stir briskly.

  • 8.

    Serve over ice in large red wine glasses.

*This sangria has 80 calories and 1 gram of sugar per serving compared to 140 calories and 12 grams of sugar per serving in the full-sugar version.
